The types and frequencies of improved non-musculoskeletal symptoms reported
after chiropractic spinal manipulation
JMPT,1999;22(9):559-564
This is a national survey of 1504 patients of 87 members of the Swedish
Chiropractic Association.
Found 1 in 4(23%) of patients consulting chiropractors for musculoskeletal conditions
experience some positive health benefits aside from strickly musculoskeletal
improvement.
First in rank were improvements in the respiratory system and the digestive system:
Second in improvement were circulatory and eye/vision status
Interesting there seemed to be a correlation with positive non-musculoskeletal
improvements and the number of areas involved. Of patients treated in one spinal area
15% had a non-musculosketal benefit. In two spinal areas the percentage increased
to 22%. With 3 areas 32% and with four area 35%.
Editors note:This is an interesting study especially in light of the common
knowledge about Chiropractors of the experience of patients having improvements
in areas beyond what they first entered the office with. Hopefully more of
these kinds of studies will be done in the future.
